North Carolina Senior Tar Heel Legislature

The Senior Tar Heel Legislators (STHL) serve to provide guidance and share insights with the North Carolina General Assembly on matters affecting residents aged 60 and above. STHL delegates and alternates are committed advocates for seniors, working to enhance their quality of life. By setting key priorities, they actively engage in advocacy efforts within their communities and at the state level.

Senior Tar Heels participate in both regional and statewide meetings, gaining a deep understanding of the needs of older adults in their areas. They also advocate for seniors by engaging with local and state leaders. To serve as an STHL delegate or alternate, you must be at least 60 years old.

Each of North Carolina's 100 counties is represented by one delegate in the Senior Tar Heel Legislature, with many counties also having an alternate. Representatives are selected by the 16 Area Agencies on Aging, with support from the North Carolina Division of Aging and Adult Services, ensuring older adults across the state have a unified voice in legislative advocacy.
